During simple rites on Friday, November 19 at the Conrad Manila Hotel, Villanueva was cited for his “notable achievements and invaluable contributions leading the nation’s campaign against illegal drugs.”

“A Filipino luminary is someone who serves as a beacon of light and inspiration to others while making a meaningful impact in our country. The award also commemorates the resilient spirit of the Filipino people and honors leaders and key drivers of our society in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic,’ the PDEA said.

With the coveted recognition, Villanueva expressed her gratitude to the organizers “for placing their trust in me as one of the leading Filipinos this year.”

The award was presented to Villanueva for championing the Barangay Drug Clearing Program (BDCP), the primary framework of the PDEA’s anti-drug strategy that embodies a holistic, pan-national approach to addressing the drug problem in the country.

In response, Villanueva pointed out that the BDCP “is the answer to our illegal drug problems”.

“To emerge victorious is to eliminate illegal drugs barangay by barangay until there are no drug-affected barangays left,” he added.

Villanueva served the country for two decades in drug law enforcement, having worked in various capacities both with the Philippine National Police (PNP) anti-narcotics unit and as one pioneer officers of the PDEA.

The Outstanding Filipino Luminary Awards 2021 were organized by Espicom Group, in cooperation with MGI Philippines; Luque International; Rotary Club Diliman Central District 3780; and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
